NY Trip 09 Photos from Times Square and Wicked

 

 

Went to go see Wicked on Broadway which was phenomenal! The tour is supposed to be coming to a theater near here later this month through December so I'd love to go see it again. This also made me realize that I really should start going to see plays more often. My mom, who's really into performing arts and a bit of a playwright herself, use to take me to see plays a lot when I was a kid.

 

This is a blurry awful picture, but a little proof that I did make a point to go see Wicked decked out in black and the perfect shade of green (though this really isn't any different from what I normally wear since my wardrobe tends to look like I stole most of my clothes from Wednesday and Morticia Addams...and now Elphaba too apparently).

I had black heels with me that have almost the exact same shade of green on the insides as those tights, However I didn't feel like and didn't think it was really all that necessary to walk all the way back to the car just to change some shoes.

 

Before and after seeing Wicked was spent roaming around Times Square, there was a festival going on with a bunch of vendors out. I think it lasted a couple days, I remember hearing about it on the news the first day we were there but we ended up not coming down to Times Square that day.

Also I really need to see The Lion King next time I'm there. I remember when it first premiered on Broadway, when I was about 9 years old, I think. I was determined to figure out how to make some puppets and masks like the ones in the show. I ended up making some odd paper mache version of Simba which didn't turn out too great. Hm, now that I think about it I think I might try that again someday when I have some free time.
That's pretty much all of the relevant photos from New York. I do still have some good shots from Ellis Island and Trinity Church that I haven't uploaded from my camera yet, I'll share those at some point in the near future.

Some favorites from Central Park, I think I was mostly happy about getting a chance to take some good photos of the Alice statue without a bunch of kids climbing all over it and people posing in front of it. It pays to go early in the morning on a weekday while school is in, haha.
I love Central Park, if I lived in or near Manhattan I think I'd end up spending a ridiculous amount of time there writing, drawing, and reading. Same could be said for Riverside park too.

I was only able to spend a couple of hours in the village of Sleepy Hollow, so the only thing I really had time to check out was the cometary. But it's a beautiful little village, lots of wooded areas, old churches and houses, cute little shops etc. I'd love to go back maybe next year this time and spend a whole day there checking everything out. It was a very messy day when I went, it was really cold and pouring raining which thankfully slowed down once I actually got to the cometary, but then picked up again before I left.
So I was pretty much soaked and frozen in the end, but I think it was worth it, this cemetery was gorgeous, despite the miserable weather. I can only image what it must look like when sun is out blazing through all of those red and yellow leaves!

Just a few favorites from my trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this past weekend. They had two fantastic special exhibits going on, one of Japanese Arms and Armor and one with some of Vermeer's paintings. Both were very fascinating, unfortunately photos weren't allowed for most of it though, as usual with most exhibits like this.

But one thing I found interesting with Vermeer's work, since this was my first time seeing any of it in person is how bright and vibrant the colors are in his paintings. You see them in books and such and the colors seem to be a bit more muted, but in person they really pop and are very bright, especially the blues and yellows in his 'The Milkmaid' painting. His paintings have a gorgeous creamy texture to them too which makes me want to use solvents and do glazes more with my own oil paintings. I haven't quite gotten the hang of glazing quite yet but that does inspire me to keep working at it.
